Well, since [personal profile] cjwatson says the tradition as reported by Sir Roth has slightly different details, perhaps there is some slightly more serious Rabbinic tradition that Toldot Yeshu was drawing from (I did casual looking a couple years ago, but didn't get far. Wikipedia cites Rabbenu Tam as originating the idea that Peter wrote Nishmat, but when I did the digging back then I couldn't figure out where Rabbenu Tam wrote that, and I'd completely believe Rabbenu Tam didn't write it and it was just attributed to Rabbenu Tam by some medieval satirist/fabulist and wikipedia just cared that there was a citation at all), but it could only possibly be slightly more serious- there certainly is no pre-medieval source for any ideas like this about Peter that I can find any evidence of.
