That theory does make sense to me. I was thoroughly fed up with LJ and desperate to move even by 2009, but lots of other people weren't, and I can see that the split maybe took both places below critical mass.

The other difference from 2005 is smartphones. 10+ years ago, most people read LJ on their desktop. DW now is unsuited to the smartphone lifestyle partly because it's designed for big screens and there's no app and so on. But even aside from that, smartphones are inherently not conducive to writing long thoughtful comments, much less to composing posts. The relative popularity of FB I think is partly a symptom, rather than a cause.
