Isn't it just? I'm glad that it's new to you as an actual anthropologist. And I'm pretty sure the textbook writers didn't mean to be sexist, any more than my feminist colleague meant to be sexist when she titled her slide "the incredible journey of a sperm". I mean, there's an amazing footnote in the Martin article where she notes that her husband did exactly the same thing even though he was obviously aware of her research...

Martin has some other stuff about how post-partum depression shouldn't be a distinct thing, it's just depression and an entirely natural response to a massive upheaval in a person's life following a traumatic experience, it's not this mysterious female disorder caused by ~hormones~. Which I'm not sure whether I buy entirely, but it's thought-provoking.
