liv: Stylised sheep with blue, purple, pink horizontal stripes, and teacup brand, dreams of Dreamwidth (sheeeep)
[personal profile] liv
Here's the thing: a lot of people are about ready to leave LJ over the latest shenanigans. But they don't want to make the leap to Dreamwidth because, frankly, there isn't enough going on here. The site is smaller, so there are fewer posts, and fewer cool people to meet. And all their friends are on LJ, which is of course a self-perpetuating situation: if "everybody" is still on LJ, then there's a huge disincentive against moving, which means that everybody continues to be on LJ.

Lots of people have realized that the best way to address this issue is, well, creating content. Some people are organizing collective efforts to create more content. This is a great idea, except for one small problem: the people who are really good at organizing and creating content are mainly fandom. I have nothing at all against fandom, but I'm not really part of it, and I think that a lot of other people who feel similarly are being put off because they see DW as yet another clubhouse for the cool fandom kids.

But I am going to take a leaf from fandom's book: I'm going to cease sitting around complaining about how DW is too quiet. Instead I'm going to participate in creating content and drawing attention to the cool stuff that already exists. So, I propose a giant non-fandom friending meme (thanks, [personal profile] delight). If you would like find some new, interesting people to read, or make new friends, or just help highlight how much cool stuff there is on DW, please comment to this post.

You're welcome to say whatever you like, but here's a suggested template:
Your identity: doesn't have to be A/S/L, but anything that you think people should know about you to be able to decide whether they're likely to be interested in getting to know you.
What you are passionate about
How you use Dreamwidth
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style.
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally.

Footnote 1: Some people have moral or technical objections to Dreamwidth, or actively prefer LJ. That's totally cool with me – this post isn't addressed to you. I'm looking to involve people who would like to make the move, but are put off because there isn't enough to read or enough people to meet here. I am not at all proselytizing, in other words, just doing my bit to fix what I see as the biggest glaring problem with DW. Other people may see other problems, and I am not trying to fix those.

Footnote 2: If you are involved in fandom, you're extremely welcome to participate. Perhaps you'd like to meet someone who shares some of your less fannish interests. Or you are welcome to go and join in some of the more explicitly fandom-related activities going on instead.

I am going to post this now, rather than waiting until the official three-week fest, because I think now is while the iron is hot and people are motivated to move to a new site. But I'll link it again when the fest starts up on 26th April, around the one-year anniversary of Dreamwidth entering Open Beta. I don't have any strong opinions about the DW-only content thing, and you don't have to be participating in that to participate in this meme.

So, go forth and friend!

ETA: And if you like the idea, please link this post all over the place. Or make your own version, or whatever, but mainly spread the word as much as possible

Who I Am
Kittykat, Real Name Redacted (you can call me Kitty if you like)
26, queer, educator, Maryland, likes pie

Passions
Too many hobbies to name, my hellion of a cat, ideas and thinking, books, preserving the freedom to think if only via the series of tubes

Usin'
Mostly prattling on about my boring life, posting random photographs in hopes of feeling artsy, the occasional recipe, and general repository of shiny things that I feel like sharing. I also somewhat regularly do the Friday Five. Leans fannish rather than workish because work is more boring than you think and I prefer keeping work and everything else separated for personal boundary-maintaining reasons.

You should read
[personal profile] copperbadge and [personal profile] mongoose even though you have to go to the trouble of getting access from the latter. Both of whom write about office hijinks far better than I ever could.

From: [personal profile] lunarwolfik
Your identity: I'm 21, soon to be 22 tomorrow (whoo!) undergrad studying anthropology/archaeology. I'm sort of a fannish magpie and am frequently full of squee for my current fandom (although there are a few that are long-lasting that I adore with a fervent passion like Buffy/Angel). I currently live in Florida although I long to leave and hope to start traveling the country digging stuff up.
What you are passionate about: Mostly my fandoms, reading and writing (I've got a couple book ideas on the back burner that I've been toying with off and on), quantum mechanics though I don't talk about it much, and video games.
How you use Dreamwidth: Mostly for fic and reading people that I know from LJ, although I've started up a couple of communities just to see what that's all about. I've decided to be much more active on DW than LJ. As for my journal, it's mostly full of squee/discussion posts about fandom, some fic or mixes, and the occasional RL post (those are few and far between).
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: Here's a fic I'm very proud of (SPN) as for typical day-to-day posts, that would be here
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth: I don't know that many people here (hence the meme) but how about [personal profile] 596spark.

kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
From: [personal profile] kate
Your identity: I'm a queer fannish feminist musician displaced from the Midwest to the East coast. I've lived and worked several large cities across the United States, and I've worked in about 20 different professions before ending up where I am now: a grants administrator in Baltimore. I proudly mod [community profile] 15_minute_ficlets (prompts for 15 minute writing sessions) and [community profile] queerlygen (community for works (fan and original) about queer people who are doing gen things... just living their life like anyone else. There's a bunch of great discussion posts from the start-up of the community - highly recommended).
What you are passionate about: I'm a bit magpie-like, which explains why fandom attracts me. But then, so do other things! I love people - if I could pick everyone's brain about everything, ever, I would. A few things I write about occasionally: writing, music, more writing, movies, work (under flock, so if it bores you, tell me not to give you access), reading, and people. Oh! And I love dancing, cooking, baking, and reality TV about all those things.
How you use Dreamwidth: I tend to spend my day on other people's journals - I like to comment and add things, jump into conversations and cheerlead. I post about my annoyances with work under flock, mostly, and I talk about writing a lot. When my life isn't topsy-turvy (like right now, when we're moving into a new apartment), I have lots to say about music, movies, and writing.
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: Characteristic? Well, lately that's a fair amount of whining, but normally it's pretty squeeful, and once in a while (particularly about music, movies, or writing) I have something interesting to say (spoilers for SyFy's Alice).

Identity: Okay the regular catalogue usually goes with: Human, Cis Woman, White, Agnosto-Atheist Jewish, Feminist, Bisexual-Queer (will go as "Gay" or "Lesbian" when necessary), Leftist, Israeli (with a bit on an existential problem living in a country such as this).

My Passions: Politics, Fictional worlds and characters, Literature (Books, Comics, Movies, anything I can get my hands on and analyse!), Geekery, sex-positive anything.
I oppose all kinds of oppression, and though I think hierarchy isn't a good thing in theory, I enjoy the pleasure of hierarchies.

How I use DW: Currently I'm using DW as a mirror for LJ (I know, I know) but am hoping to use less of LJ as I get the hang of DW, which I really enjoy. It's pretty much my all purpose blogging platform. My DW is a mish-mash, much like the lists above,

Your identity: I'm female, living in the DC metro area with my as-good-as-married bf. I'm sort of up in the air career-wise like so many people right now.

What you are passionate about: fish and gardening. I talk about my fish a lot (over 500 gallons of aquariums in the house) and post pictures pretty often. Gardening season is also getting started so I'll be talking about my projects related to that. I have fannish interests, but I'm not a writer and fannish posts are mostly about how I've been up entirely too late reading.

How you use Dreamwidth: I'm still primarily LJ based, mostly because I have a number of friends that don't see a reason to move but I do remember to log in more and more often as my flist gets posty-er.

How you use Dreamwidth I usually post a few times a week. Some of it is links to articles, mostly it's stuff I've done or read or noticed recently. I'm Vicki, or [personal profile] redbird (the username is from my first tattoo). I'm 46, bisexual, polyamorous, and pretty settled (three long-term partners); a native New Yorker who still lives here, but takes advantage of fewer of the city's resources than I would if I had more time and energy.

Passionate about: the people I love (not only my partners), feminism, GLBT rights, some kinds of honesty (I don't care if you think these pants make my butt look fat, but don't ask me to hide my relationships or your embezzlement), fat and body acceptance, some chunks of science, and sharing information. (Some of this is subject to change.)

At the moment I'm cross-posting between here and LiveJournal (same username), and using them both partly to keep track of my day-to-day life for my own reference; partly to keep my friends informed of what's going on in my life; and partly to share thoughts, book reviews, and even links.

No specific recent post seems both interesting and typical; there's been too much logistic stuff.

[personal profile] stonebender writes well, though he doesn't post very often, on things including disability issues.

the_wanlorn: The Doubtful Guest (Default)
From: [personal profile] the_wanlorn
Your identity: I'm an unemployed former college dropout, giving the whole college thing another try. I'm majoring in CS, and spend most of my time attached to a computer. I've lived in Massachusetts all my life and am too attached to leave. I live "alone" with a bunch of cats and a dog. I'm a queer feminist geek. I really, really, really love capslock and italics. I am also really, really curmudgeonly.

What you are passionate about: Oh man, lots of things! Whatever fandom I'm into at the moment (right this second it is Lost), Marvel comics, Farscape, baking, knitting, sewing, crafting in general, books, writing, social issues, and homesteading and hippie shit (neither of which I talk about on my DW a lot).

How you use Dreamwidth: Mostly to blather on about whatever I'm thinking about at the moment. Currently, it's a lot of Lost and The Dresden Files stuff because that's what I'm watching/reading at the moment. I also do a lot of interactive fandom memes right now, because I'm trying to get back in the habit of posting every day, which I fell out of when I was sick for a while. In general, though, my uses are pretty fandom-oriented in that I spend a lot of time talking about/thinking out loud about shows/books/comics.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style. Here, have a bunch! Talking about TV (spoilers for recent Being Human, Leverage, and Survivors episodes), not talking about TV, talking about my cats, talking about books, and making up ridiculous shit about comic book characters.

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally. I really like [personal profile] haunted's comics entries! They are pretty great, but there is only a large possiblity that I only think that because we agree on most things about Marvel comics.

takemyrevolution: take what you want and pay for it says god (Mana-sama ruffles)
From: [personal profile] takemyrevolution
My identity: I am takemyrevolution. My real name is not a great secret, but I try not to mention outside of unlocked posts. You can call me Rev if you like.

I am twenty-seven years old, female, bisexual, polyamorous (dating a couple), Egyptian pagan (dedicated to Anubis). An artist. A writer. A feminist. More than a little goth.

Passionate about: writing (both fan fic and original stuff), art, Paganism and magick, the environment/being green, cooking, fandom stuff, cosplay, books and manga, Japanese language, German language, other things that I am forgetting.

You could also look at my profile to learn more about me. Or you could ask me questions. I don't mind.

How I use DW: fandom stuff, pagan/magick stuff, cooking/sewing/household/craft stuff. I also talk about my life, but anything really personal (pictures of me/where I live) will be flocked.

Some random posts: blah, blah, blah, blah.

From: [personal profile] holyschist
Yay! I'm only just starting to read through this, but already seeing lots of really interesting-looking people!

I'm a queer, white, cis feminist, currently in a relationship with a man. My training is in science, although I'm not pursing a traditional scientist career. I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (yes, it has flaws; I don't really have other reenactment options in my area, and it's the closest I've found to a comfortable community for me, at least in parts). I'm almost done with my M.S.

I love science, history, museums, speculative fiction, crafts, and cute animals! I'm passionate about a lot of things, including all of that, plus social justice issues.

Most of what I post publicly is about crafts, the Society for Creative Anachronism, book reviews, periodic social justice stuff, and sometimes photo posts (I'm working on doing more of these). I've been known to post recipes in the past, and might in the future. Under access lock, I post stuff about work/personal life; it's mostly pretty boring.

Recently I wrote about plans for remaking a 16th-century-style shirt (actual dress diary with photos coming up!) and brief thoughts on books I've read recently, pending actual reviews. And for a not-so-exciting example of a photo post, some recent illumination and embroidery projects and experiments.

I am a big fan of [personal profile] kyleri, who has a lovely body products business and one of the awesomest cats in existence, [personal profile] laughingrat, who is hilarious and super-interesting on topics from feminism to libraries, and [personal profile] snarp, who writes possibly the best book stuff ever, including Today I Am a Darkover Book.

I mod several pretty quiet at the moment communities about crafts and/or the SCA, plus [community profile] spaceopera.

Your identity: I'm an East German history nerd who's currently getting a degree in Information Science. I lived in Irland for 3 1/2 years. At some point I studied European history & African Science but eventually quit. I'm curious, slightly neurotic, introverted, magpie-like, lazy, blunt but generally harmless.

What you are passionate about: I love nectarines, history, Dune, Zanzibar, Berlin and John Sheppard. In no particular order. I also volunteer a lot of my time for the OTW.

How you use Dreamwidth: I go through phases. Currently I post a lot of links to stuff I find interesting. Some of my posts are about fandom, some about politics and society, some about RL, university or work (those are mostly locked, though). 90% or my posts are in English but occasionally I switch to German.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: My most recent post is about the first episode of The Pacific (spoilers!). This is how my usual linkspams look (half English/half-German). And a random RL/university post that's not locked.

Your identity: Canadian from Scottish parents. Hard of hearing. Cis-female, 33 years of age. I do admin for a University department - I find a surprising number of my LJ friends work at universities. I'd like to write professionally but I'm still finding the self-discipline. Definitely fannish, mostly about bands, although I've read a little of pretty much everything. I'm a left-wing Catholic in search of a sympathetic parish - somewhat of a lost cause.

What you are passionate about: Music and writing. I write a lot more about music though. I go on several roadtrips a year to see some band or other, and I try to fit in at least one folk festival a year (usually Summerfolk). I blame this on Moxy Fruvous.

How you use Dreamwidth: I post at least a couple of times a week, most of it under lock. (My public feed goes to facebook and my cousins just don't need to know about my online life that much) Public posts tend to be concert or album reviews, random rants about life, the universe and everything and the very occasional fic.

Hi! I'm Kat, 1/3rd of the Dreamwidth Support Triumvirate. I am an active member of the SCA (historical recreation) with an emphasis on bardic and fabric geekery. I am the admin of the popular DW foodie community [community profile] omnomnom, and enjoy making delicious foods!

Basically, I am a huge dork who is prone to tl;dr. Add me!

ETA: I reed unstrictunz goodlier. Duh.
Your identity: I think I covered this part above, but just in case... Hi! I'm Kat and I can't read instructions. :)
What you are passionate about: The SCA is my primary hobby, with an emphasis on bardic and fiber geekery. I don't knit though, but a lot of my friends do! I am a true aficionado of hand-knit socks. I am addicted to spellcheckers on computers and it annoys me when they don't recognize common words like internet. I am a college student in Middle of Nowhere, Midwest, USA, majoring in religion. I'd like to get my Master of Divinity degree (aka go to seminary) and eventually end up in either the Navy or as a bioethicist. I'm still a fair bit away from that though, and I usually post all religious musings under a cut (which, ftr, doesn't happen that often). I believe that living passionately is the only way to live.
How you use Dreamwidth: I am 1/3rd of the Support Triumvirate here on Dreamwidth, with an emphasis towards user education and volunteer training. Besides that, I mostly use Dreamwidth to record cracktastic imaginings, interesting conversations and links to things that amuse me. On occasion, I'll commit TL;DR in a spectacular fashion on some topic that is driving me mad. Often, it will be something from class, but sometimes it will be a long-form rant on some random subject that no one else really cares about. In very rare cases, they're even informative. :)
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: Here's my most recent long-form rant why, exactly, I think Dreamwidth is really awesome and... hold on, I've got another one around here... Nope. Well, here have two entries containing amusing slicen of life.
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally: [personal profile] azurelunatic is always worth a read. She is pretty thorough about explaining the whys and wherefores of her stuff if you've got questions. She is also the documentation queen of #dw (the IRC channel) and is pretty awesome.

my identity: in my thirties, from east germany (and stuck there), currently unemployed, fighting recurring bouts of depression and anxiety disorder, a fan without fandom (i'm in and out of fandoms fast, i've been at it a while and have gotten fanciful/snobbish about it).

what i'm passionate about: photography! politics of daily life (i have a master's degree in political science, to me pretty much everything is political), knitting, gaming (computer, board and tabletop games), classical music, comics, the list goes on...

how i use DW: aside from the occasional fannish contribution, i post everything under lock. i pretty much grant access to everybody, though. i just don't want the chronicles of my life out in the open for the entire internet. my journal is a journal much more than a blog. i sometimes link to news articles, i mostly write down the continuing narration of my life.

rec: i mod [community profile] photofriends. you are very welcome to join, we are a friendly bunch. however, for legal reasons (issues with people in pictures) the entire community is access locked, you must join to read.

From: [personal profile] allchildren
Your identity: Tris, 25 (for ten more days only ;_;), queer white atheist Jewish Northern Californian; feminist/fangirl/geek/punk/hippie. Dog person. Depression & anxiety are also big parts of my identity right now, unfortunately.

What you are passionate about: Women & media representation. Intersectionality. Sustainability. Food. Fiction, storycraft, music, pop culture: art that tries.

How you use Dreamwidth: Honestly, I don't quite know yet. I come out of fandom (current main love: Star Trek - DS9 & TNG in addition to STXI) but have been feeling pretty adrift and wordless lately, and have not managed much original content lately beyond filtered chronicling of my mental health. Fascinating! But I feel on the cusp of of journalish sea change, and think Dreamwidth might be instrumental in me finding my voice again. I think I need a new community. I certainly love reading my network here.

My writing style of late is extremely inconsistent, but may range from capslock about TV to serious contemplations of Jewish identity to music sharing to half-baked analysis of sci-fi tropes. Next: who knows?

I really enjoy [personal profile] bossymarmalade's writing.

And for a taste of things I think about on a daily basis, my google reader shares and tumblr probably say a lot more than my DW front page.
