everything I've read about it suggests it's a large, complex work of art which I need to set aside time to concentrate on, I can't just listen to the songs in the background. And I'm a bit intimidated by the medium of a "visual album".

Hmm... I think the genius of Lemonade is really that it's both a work of pop that you can just listen to in the background and really enjoy, and an incredibly dense, complex work of art that requires your full attention to unpack. I've experienced the album in all sorts of different contexts in the past year, but more often as background than foreground.
