Well, thank you for not being offended. I'm kind of cross at Roth for putting that material in his hagaddah, though as [personal profile] seekingferret points out the details are different enough that maybe he had it from a slightly more reputable source.

Dictionary: the best dictionary is Jastrow but it's not exactly user-friendly, it's scans of the pages of the book and you kind of have to be able to spell in Hebrew to be able to search it. If you're looking at scripture and want proper detailed dictionary rigour, I recommend going there once you've figured out from just searching in transliteration what word you're looking for. Jastrow gives for פטר to open or break through; to send off or dismiss; to give leave or let go; to acquit or exempt. I think that's the kind of meaning that is being related to the name Peter, pretending ignorance that it actually originates from the Greek word for rock.
