I can imagine that having a physical impairment meaning you can't sing in tune would be a major issue, yeah. Also retrospectively sympathy on having years of sinusitis, that must have been nasty.

I can sometimes hear when I'm out of tune, but not completely reliably, and only if I can hear the actual notes I'm supposed to be singing outside my head, which is not generally what happens in karaoke.

I am somewhat annoyed that from the age of 5 or 6 I got mocked for not being able to sing rather than helped to develop the skill; I was still young enough that I probably had the brain plasticity to catch up what I'd missed during the first few years of my life, and anyway would probably have a lot fewer hang-ups about it. I think educators now are better than they were in the 80s at applying growth mindset ideas and not just writing children off as 'bad at' particular skills.
