Yeah, that definitely seems a wise choice. Initially I thought it was quite cool to have such a thing as a divorce in a fantasy series, and that Brust was willing to go there when the first few books had set up Vlad and Cawti as this great love story. But Vlad's humour gets more and more 'bitches, amirite?' as the series goes on, so I'm not at all surprised to hear that that arc was based on a real life divorce.
