Interesting observation. I'm not sure about the history; I think it may have got more common, but also, it always depended a lot what kind of educational institution you were in. I did a bunch of things that were in fact group work but weren't officially called that, like several people sharing equipment in lab classes. But rarely had to write a joint project which was then marked for the whole group, which is the most obvious meaning of the term.
