Giant non-fandom friending meme

Here's the thing: a lot of people are about ready to leave LJ over the latest shenanigans. But they don't want to make the leap to Dreamwidth because, frankly, there isn't enough going on here. The site is smaller, so there are fewer posts, and fewer cool people to meet. And all their friends are on LJ, which is of course a self-perpetuating situation: if "everybody" is still on LJ, then there's a huge disincentive against moving, which means that everybody continues to be on LJ.

Lots of people have realized that the best way to address this issue is, well, creating content. Some people are organizing collective efforts to create more content. This is a great idea, except for one small problem: the people who are really good at organizing and creating content are mainly fandom. I have nothing at all against fandom, but I'm not really part of it, and I think that a lot of other people who feel similarly are being put off because they see DW as yet another clubhouse for the cool fandom kids.

But I am going to take a leaf from fandom's book: I'm going to cease sitting around complaining about how DW is too quiet. Instead I'm going to participate in creating content and drawing attention to the cool stuff that already exists. So, I propose a giant non-fandom friending meme (thanks, [personal profile] delight). If you would like find some new, interesting people to read, or make new friends, or just help highlight how much cool stuff there is on DW, please comment to this post.

You're welcome to say whatever you like, but here's a suggested template:
Your identity: doesn't have to be A/S/L, but anything that you think people should know about you to be able to decide whether they're likely to be interested in getting to know you.
What you are passionate about
How you use Dreamwidth
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style.
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally.

Footnote 1: Some people have moral or technical objections to Dreamwidth, or actively prefer LJ. That's totally cool with me – this post isn't addressed to you. I'm looking to involve people who would like to make the move, but are put off because there isn't enough to read or enough people to meet here. I am not at all proselytizing, in other words, just doing my bit to fix what I see as the biggest glaring problem with DW. Other people may see other problems, and I am not trying to fix those.

Footnote 2: If you are involved in fandom, you're extremely welcome to participate. Perhaps you'd like to meet someone who shares some of your less fannish interests. Or you are welcome to go and join in some of the more explicitly fandom-related activities going on instead.

I am going to post this now, rather than waiting until the official three-week fest, because I think now is while the iron is hot and people are motivated to move to a new site. But I'll link it again when the fest starts up on 26th April, around the one-year anniversary of Dreamwidth entering Open Beta. I don't have any strong opinions about the DW-only content thing, and you don't have to be participating in that to participate in this meme.

So, go forth and friend!

ETA: And if you like the idea, please link this post all over the place. Or make your own version, or whatever, but mainly spread the word as much as possible

I'm Travis. 33. Trans. Autistic. Queer. Native So Cal resident.

I use my DW for all sorts of stuff. Every day I post something or things that made me happy that day. I also post about decluttering and organising my house (omg it's March and I haven't done anything this year yet D:), video games (Wii, PS2, DS, casual PC games; currently into Lego Indiana Jones, Zelda Twilight Princess, and Plants vs Zombies), book (literary fiction, PoC, queer, YA) and manga (a little of everything) reviews (and less often film and tv episode reviews). I also do a lot of music sharing (eclectic, primarily English and Japanese) and scanlating. Occasionally I post candy and snack reviews.

I also post about fannish stuff and write and review fanfic. My writing is multifannish and my reading is currently almost exclusively in Sherlock Holmes fandom.

[personal profile] yasaman 2010-03-16 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Your identity: yasaman aka Yasmin, a 21 year old Near Eastern Studies/Persian and History student (graduating in a couple of months!) from California. I'm Afghan-American, an immigrant, liberal, fannish, and a total nerd.

Passions: books (sci fi, fantasy, and young adult especially), music (I have broad and eclectic tastes), fandom, history (US history and intellectual history), poetry, cooking, languages (Persian and French especially), social justice stuff.

How I use Dreamwidth: equal parts personal journal, and a collection of thoughts on stuff I find interesting. Also, I post reviews of books, music, and movies, and talk about my favorite TV shows. And since I'm in my last semester of college and writing my thesis, a fair amount of whining about school. I'm trying to be more active on DW than I was on LJ, at least in terms of adding other people and commenting more.

A recent post: well, my most recent post is me flailing about my thesis, which is mostly uninteresting to anyone but me, but I reviewed some books recently, and also talked about some random links.

I'm zortified over on LJ and my fic is posted on gilascave. I'm 39, have been married to another woman for 11 (12? 13? don't make me do the math) years. Currently in Oregon. Poly about love and religion and chocolate. Er, not white chocolate.

I'm passionate about ranting about stupid people, knitting, quilting, ranting about stupid people, taking it easy, napping, ranting about stupid people, and taking over the world so I can get rid of the stupid people. Or retrain them, at least. I work retail and should be in bed asleep right now as my shift starts in five hours. I'm diabetic, and often talk about how well (and not well) I'm doing at keeping that under control.

I use DW to post about life, stupid people, and random other things. I consider myself fannish but I'm not in any particular fandom at the moment and it means I don't have a lot to read. ;-)

Wow, okay, I adore "poly about love and religion and chocolate." Because that is such a brilliant way of putting it. (I'm poly, and religion-wise I'm always sort of complicated b/c I say my sense of faith and spirituality is "syncretic" but no one knows what that means.)

[personal profile] hazel 2010-03-16 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Your identity: [personal profile] hazel. I'm a public servant (junior!)-slash-law student in Wellington, New Zealand. I live in a very stable, fannish, geeky flat with 2 close friends and 2 cats.
What you are passionate about: politics, especially the ways in which institutions gain power and influence that goes far beyond the people who work in them. Also law, economics, people failing to obey the "keep left" rule on the footpaths of Wellington city, swear words, the English language. In RL I spend a lot of time talking to my flatmates about fic, but because I do that I don't really talk about it online much.
How you use Dreamwidth: To rant, and also to make drunk!posts that are amusing only to me. I also talk quite a bit about work and university.
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: more serious here, an example of a rant here, and a post about politics here

Huzzah! I was a law student, and now I have a law degree and am no more employed than I was when I started. But law's interesting to me, and so is language. Also fandom and New Zealand. I've never been but it's high on the list of "those places I one day once visit." I had this girlfriend when I was 17 who was in love with NZ, and we went to different schools so we would write journals for each other and exchange them when we met up, and she'd always paste pictures of NZ in them and I got kind of hooked. A place with food, wine, surfing, indigenous culture, and scenery is automatically awesome in my book.

wicked_socks: girl wearing striped socks (socks striped)

[personal profile] wicked_socks 2010-03-16 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Your identity: I'm socks, female, 23, live in the US. I am also Hungarian, lived there and grew up bilingual. I'm a Biology student focusing in Herpetology (amphibians and reptiles) and doing lots of fieldwork. I'm pretty interested in martial arts and am currently practicing Aikido. I love hiking and spending time in the woods. But I'm also a city girl at heart.

What you are passionate about: Science! Specifically, Zoology! I love drawing and photography and trying to improve my skills at it. It's hard for me to walk past a bookstore or art store (or tack shop!) without stopping. I rode horses throughout my childhood and feel at home in stables. I love languages. I studied Japanese for a couple years, and am trying to resurrect my rusty French.

How you use Dreamwidth: I post about my fieldwork a lot, and random links I find funny on the net. Sometimes I get obsessive about things I don't know and then post a fact sheet about it. I am also a fannish person, so there's a bit of that around. Sometimes I'm a lurker online, but Dreamwidth seems to bring out the extrovert that I am off the net. I do lock some things down, but I generally give access to anyone who engages me in conversation.

Your identity: I'm Nicki. I'm in my mid-30s and a school counselor living in Northern Cali in the US reasonably close to both Sacramento and SF. I'm a currently non-practicing straight woman, a semi-secular Catholic, and a former Airforce brat. I've lived a fair number of places, NSEW US and one tour in Europe. I'm of pale persuasion.

What you are passionate about: I talk a lot about education (often in complaint form). I'm currently writing (a) book(s) and sometimes I talk about that. Sometimes I talk about feminism. Sometimes I talk about life in general.

How you use Dreamwidth: I tend to use DW as a more plugged in journal. My more long term friends (from message boards, meet-ups, etc) are mostly on LJ still and I read them, but I find myself not posting there as much. On DW I read a fair amount of activism stuff and I post more to DW than I do to LJ at this point. Sometimes I post original fic with occasional fanfic.

What you are passionate enthusiastic about: Precise word use! I post about math, poetry, history, science fiction, and bits of SCA policy. I cook a lot and knit a lot, but don't post unless I have a question or a picture or a problem.

How you use Dreamwidth: I read all the time and post less often (often under lock). My cats and my husband go without saying, like that vehicle in The Phantom Tollbooth.

*smiles* If I were a thief, I'd be stealing your "bisexual by nature, lesbian by choice; single and not looking to change that" and sticking it on my OkCupid profile. Heh. I'm kind of afraid to say something like "bisexual by nature" because I feel like "they've" won (who's they? I dunno?) or that men will suddenly think I'm interested (argh) or something along those lines, but it's kind of true, in that I clearly have a capacity for relationships with men. Me: I'm 25, female, and I live in the Philippines. I'm fannish, but more of a lurker than an active participant in any fandom. I tend to post short, quick entries a couple of times a week.

Passions: code, knitting, dreamwidth, whatever has caught my eye. I am interested in feminism, but I don't tend to post about it.

Usage I tend to post about my daily life: whatever I happen to be doing, anything new I may have learned, occasionally about local plus links to communities or pages which catch my attention.

One note, if you go back through my entries, you'll see some Twitter posts -- I use my journal to archive my tweets so I can search through them, but the posts are all backdated, so you won't see them on your /read pages :)

How you use Dreamwidth: I post fic and thoughts on various fandoms - Doctor Who, Marvel comics, House MD, lots of others. Recipes, music, links. General random rambling thoughts about living in Australia, living rurally, living in the modern world. I use my journal to post my yearly NaNo project (under an opt-in filter.) Lately I've been chatting a lot about my tomatoes. (This should decrease in frequency as we shift from summer to autumn.) Identity I'm LITE on Livejournal. [personal profile] hkellick here. my name is Howard. I'm 34 and married with a five week old son. I'm exploring the wonderful and crazy world of fatherhood. I'm a FEMA floodplain analyst, meaning that I review other people's models to update their floodplain maps. I'm a liberal, but not one of the fringe types. I'm a gamer, playing a mix of role playing games, Sim-type games and the occasional other cool-looking games

Passions: Politics, Food Politics, Cats, The Environment, Games, Science in general, Family Life (again, this whole crazy world of fatherhood)

How I use DW; My Dreamwidth is mostly a journal of my life, with the occasional post about a game I'm playing, a game I'm excited about or some news that got my attention.

Characteristic Post: The Longest (and hopefully best) Day. - The Day my son was born.

As a hard-core Sims fan, I enjoy reading both [community profile] thesims3 and [community profile] sims3. They both tend to post slightly different stuff and I enjoy them both. :D

My identity: thirty something librarian in the middle part of the U.S. I'm an avid baker and crafter, used to be a prolific writer, though I've gotten out of the habit and I'm trying to get back into it.
My passion: Er, what day is it? Quilting and knitting, mostly. Also reading just about anything. And baking.
How you use Dreamwidth: Whatever strikes my fancy Or if I'm feeling accomplished

Your identity: Librarian at an independent (non-religious) day school, general geek, priestess, occasional musician, voracious reader. I'm 34, and live in Minneapolis (I grew up in Boston, but have been in Minnesota for 11 years, and still adore it.) I have both techie hobbies (blogging, casual World of Warcraft, etc.) and very low-tech ones (handspinning, baking bread, playing folk harp)

A lot of posts right now are access-locked, as they're health related, but generally, I post a bit more in public on Dreamwidth. I'm glad to add people, too.

What you are passionate about:: Connecting people with information that is useful to them, or that they care about. Patterns. Geeking out on relationships, communication, how things work, how to make them work better.

I'm a priestess in a small religious witchcraft tradition based in the Twin Cities. (There are reasons I don't say 'Wiccan', but that's the right ballpark to start with.) I write about it a fair bit, but I have lots of people who aren't religious or who are from other religions tell me they really like reading my comments about it - I think it's because I focus on the interpersonal dynamics and how-to-teach bits, rather than trying to convince anyone to believe or do what I do (something I have no interest in: I think people have to come to that choice themselves.)

How you use Dreamwidth: I write about daily life stuff (I've been fighting medical foo for the last few months, so there's a lot about that recently), but also long thinky posts about how things work, and how to make them work better.

Some links to recent posts I'm working on a series talking about various aspects of independent schools: part two will be following in the next day or two. I did a post a month or so ago about the meaning of health and things that I think would be actually helpful, but aren't so available.

And there's a 3 part intro to my religious practices (aimed at people not very familiar with Paganism) that I wrote when I got started on Dreamwidth which is a pretty good example of my religious writing as well as being a good intro to what I do and how I do it in the religious realm.

I am a dude, and I got problems like everyone does. I am American, pushing 30, nearsighted, work with computers, unable to grow a beard yet frequently in need of a shave. My favorite things are strange music and good food, but I can't promise how much, if I any, I might write about them. I'm using dreamwidth in the same way that I and others used livejournal in the early aughts: as a kind of public diary, sharing my thoughts and whatever else behind a comfortable cloak of anonymity.

My writing style is tedious. I use too many adverbs, I punctuate sloppily and write in run-on sentences, and I rarely have a theme going in, preferring to blaze away with a thought and a stream of consciousness to see where it goes. And with that I tend to meander, still trying to shoehorn in a few favorite tangents even after I've found a structure and have some paragraphs planned out. So far I've only used my journal for ruminating on girl problems and slowly responding to a meme leftover from livejournal. The middle mile marker of that meme is a good epitome, taking a throw-away question and turning it into a few hundred words of rambling about religion and childhood memories and dessert: http://dromomaniac.dreamwidth.org/1779.html

I'm Sofia, an undergrad and quasi-archivist (currently doing a lot of the work without any of the formal qualifications) living in Boston with my sister (who is trans). My social life consists mainly of concerts and other kinds of performances (burlesque, drag and queer, size-diverse dance, etc.).

While I am in fandom (bandom, White Collar, Leverage), I don't post about it that often; my participation takes place mainly in other people's comments. I am really passionate about Dreamwidth! I also love my work.

My journal is mainly public; when I lock posts, it's generally to make them minimally-googleable, not secure. I grant access to pretty much everyone. Locked posts include anything with specific info on my work, times when I post my address or phone number, and the occasional poetry post. I post about my life, online and offline.

A few of my recent posts: a public post about life in the archives, my life in meatspace, a yay Dreamwidth/some other stuff post, and an example of what my fandom posts look like.

Who I am: I'm an outdoorsy, active, American fortysomething married woman. I also have a fannish identity, which is not too hard to figure out (and I am no longer freaked out by people figuring it out) but I'd appreciate the connections not being made in public.

What I am passionate about: Running (I'm training for the Boston Marathon, which will be my fifth marathon), hiking and backpacking in the Colorado mountains and the Utah desert, mountain biking, skiing, rock climbing, anything else that involves my body and the out-of-doors. In RL I am a climate scientist and I am kind of in love with science in general. (And I don't have a lot of patience with people who think global warming is a hoax, or who take horoscopes seriously.) Also travel, politics, cooking (although oddly that's mostly ended up in my fannish journal) and the odd haiku and limerick.

I use Dreamwidth for: I post mostly photos and accounts of my various outdoorsy exploits. I don't post a lot.

I've been on LJ since the days of codes, when Brad promised us there would never be advertising. After Basic accounts started getting ads, I paid up so that my non-LJ friends and family who read my journal wouldn't see them, as well as to give me post-by-email capability which I needed while traveling. After the last round of LJ fail, I decided to not renew my paid account (which expired yesterday!) and instead encourage people to read me here instead.

Recent posts of mine: Some skiing photos; Rim Rock Marathon race report; hiking Silver Mountain.

Other journals I like: [community profile] runners and [personal profile] whatistigerbalm. Among others. Most of my nonfannish friends are on LJ. But I would like to meet likeminded people here.

Your identity: Hi, I'm Sasha. :) I'm a 30 year old mother of two-under-eighteen months. I identify as bi but it's mostly a moot point since I married a man and had his babies. :D I'm an accountant, though I stopped working when I chose to have kids. I may or may not return to the field when the boys are older. I'm Christian and liberal (my God and my government do not good bedfellows make.) though I tend toward the middle rather than the far left. Fandom was my first home on the internet, but I don't participate much anymore.

What you are passionate about: Gay rights, finding a tolerant church, birth advocacy, eradicating obstetrical trauma, and breaking away from the oppressive and judgey culture of parenting. And knitting. Never ever forget the knitting. :D And the sewing...

How you use Dreamwidth Lately, not a lot. And what is there is baby and pregnancy and trauma related. I'm still trying to find my feet after two years of life-changing event after life-changing event. I'd welcome company while I try and figure out just who I am *now*. I do read and comment, though, my RL extrovert tendencies have dimmed a great deal and I'd like to find my way back. :)

You're no less bisexual for being married to a male and having had kids, even if you don't see it as practical to have another partner. I'm still quite bi, with wife and kids, and I find cute boys every bit as cute as I did before I got hitched. :) Adding, if you don't mind.

Name: [personal profile] branchandroot, Branch

Stuff I like/write about: Well, to be fair, I do write a lot about fandom and fic, but the majority of my posting is about my day-to-day life. About web sites and my students, gardening and cats. My fandom posts also tend strongly toward the analytical, so anyone hopping on board should be prepared for a bunch of lit crit, basically. I am very feminist, politically liberal, philosophically republican (in the older sense), professionally academic, and frequently impatient.

How I post: Rather a lot. Not always daily, but several posts a week at least, sometimes several a day depending on my mood. My journal is a mixed outlet--it's my fic-release location but it's also my personal journal. I do offer subscription filters, so people can narrow down their reading experience if they want.

Your identity: I'm Aurora, 26, rooming with one of my brothers in MedellĂn, Colombia and my 8 month old black lab, Impala. I identify as omnisexual/pansexual, open-minded and when asked about religion I just say: I believe. I'm Colombian by birth, raised in Alabama and lived 10 years in Florida. I don't always fit in and am the biggest geek on just about everything. I am an ESL/EFL teacher and love to study and ramble on about grammar and linguistics.

What you are passionate about: Everything, if it can hold my attention long enough. I believe in equal rights for all and being tolerant of others' choices. I love reading (anything), writing, art, photography and English grammar to an almost unhealthy degree. My dad raised me with Sci-Fi and I love Classic/Mullet rock more than anything. I love watching TV shows and movies, but right now my number one passion is the TV show Supernatural. I may also, on occasion, go off about design/coding/html things as well.

How you use Dreamwidth: I just made the 'big' move over from LJ because I realized how ridiculous it was to keep putting it off. I'll talk about anything and everything, including fannish things. All my fan stuff though, is posted at a separate community and any fannish ramblings are placed in a fannish filter. I want to start working more on my original stuff and really focus on setting up a good ESL/EFL study guide for non-native speakers.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: The only public entry I have at the moment is where I wrote about Dreamwidth here. Your identity: I'm Naraht, also known as Emily Shore (not my real name). A twenty-something woman, American-born and British-educated, just finished my DPhil and casting about for a mission in life. Baptized Greek Orthodox and an agnostic. Socialist and feminist. (Also white, middle-class, straight, cis and not disabled, but looking to become more aware of my privilege in all things.)

What you are passionate about: Social justice; the complicated nature of religious belief and identity; unschooling; British social and cultural history; the British pop scene in the 60s; the Apollo program; classical music, especially twentieth-century; travel; writing fiction; 19th century British poetry; and I'm sure I'm forgetting things. My journal has a tendency to be taken over by whatever I'm currently obsessing about but I usually try to keep some balance!

How you use Dreamwidth: DW is my main social circle online. I still crosspost and read on LJ but I don't allow comments there. I wouldn't say that I post everyday, but probably more days than not. Very few of my posts are about my day-to-day life; I'm far more an ideas person.
