Poll: domain name
Jul. 25th, 2003 11:46 amThe question of the day is: do I need my own domain name? dopey.me.uk is still free, and I'm kind of tempted by it. I'm inclined to feel that a subdomain (livredor.p5.org.uk) is pretty adequate, especially as my webpage is a companion page to this journal just now, and it's nice to have them vaguely unified. I think if I could come up with something brilliant, I'd register it (assuming I could do so with sensible top domains). Opinions? Suggestions?

Vestigial nationalism means that I'm slightly inclined towards a .uk domain (apart from anything else they're a lot cheaper).
I wasn't really thinking of a domain based on livredor. Livre d'or is the title of my journal, not my handle, and if I want my own domain, I want it to be one that people will associate with me rather than my livejournal (especially as not all my acquaintances are on livejournal!)
I already have livredor as a subdomain, which I set up because what I want right now falls into the gap between a journal and a blog. And I'm kludging to get round this using a livejournal account with links to a webpage.
The original 'do I want a domain name' question was looking at a more long term situation. I might at some point want to do a proper personal webpage, I will very likely want a memorable, permanent email address. Still feels like it's marginally worth it, rather than obviously worth it.

I do appreciate how helpful everyone has been over what was just a random thought!

Date: 2003-07-26 04:45 pm (UTC)I am a bit of a domain hog really. I have loads of them, but never quite seem to get around to using them. maybe I should have them valued...
My favourite is definitely findatlantis.com, but I do also have just about every variation on cyberneural.com too.

Yeah, I'm set up so anyone can comment, cos I'm not willing to force people onto this particular system.
ba.be (and most pronounceable two-letter combinations I suspect) is gone, sadly. I did think of that one. Still debating whether it's worth the extra hassle to get a funky .be domain, or whether I should just stick with a boring .uk one...
