I've found out a couple of random things that may be useful to some others. Or else they may be either useless or completely obvious, but I'll share them just in case.

First up, a way of running Firefox on old computers that are short of memory (until I discovered this, Firefox was too crashy for me to use). [livejournal.com profile] fyre came up with a very useful fix for this. Since he describes it better than I can, see his Firefox memory issues post. Many thanks for that one. (Note: his site is semi-down at the moment, but still just about legible.)

Secondly, I have been tearing my hair out because I couldn't get Gmail's POP3 system to work; it kept giving me a weird error message about untrusted certificates in an SSL chain and suggesting I should add the appropriate site to a trusted list, something I don't know how to do. I assumed it was a temporary blip and trustingly waited for Google to fix it. Eventually I got fed up and went poking around, and it turns out the solution was to change the POP server details to pop.googlemail.com (rather than pop.gmail.com). This may be a localization thing, but it fixed a very annoying issue for me, at least.

Ooooo!

Does this let you send mail as well as receive? I can receive through POP but cannot send, which is more than a wee bit annoying.

Sending through gmail works with something called smtp. I wouldn't swear to it but the server for that is probably smtp.googlemail.com - it's been a while since I set it up though so I could be wrong, and I'm on the wrong computer. Gmail's help file on setting up pop does explain this, I think, and it was easy enough when I did it.

Right, know that. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I know SMTP, but while pop.gmail.com works, smtp.gmail.com does not, so was wondering if the googmail version worked for you -- or if smtp had never been an issue before. I'll definitely try this when I get home later today. It's been nice to have gmail, but a royal pain that I can't send anything unless I log in direct to the website :S

I just started with the basic course for MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician). I don't know about gmail. I put in as I was instructed "localhost" for Outlook and Oulook Express (I have two systems on my laptop). My AOL does not work with anything. You just said it instructed you to put it in a trusted side. You can do that in IE (Internet Explorer) Click Tool and then Internet Options. In Security you find trusted sides. You can ad any side from there which starts with https:// as a secured side such as log in webpages. I cannot tell you about gmail. I still don't know how to find out the right name and from where to set up an account. I should ask the teacher next time.

Sorry, I mean "Tools". Just a spelling mistake of me again.
