Down with geography!
Jun. 21st, 2006 08:29 pmSo all you people who have been posting maps of Europe in your LJs with big blank spaces in Scandinavia, you should definitely come and visit me. Sweden is huge (did you know that it is as far from the south of Sweden to the north, as from the south of Sweden to Rome), so visiting me will automatically give you lots and lots of red coverage. *coax*tempt*
I am amused by communications technology. My sister texted me from France to keep me updated on the scoreline for the England – Sweden game last night. (I didn't dare to venture out last night, much less to find a bar where I could watch the game.) Primarily, I am glad that England are not going to end up playing Germany, because I feared really scary consequences from the thugs calling themselves fans. But I do admit (
lethargic_man, avert your eyes now) to feeling some degree of pleasure that England have acquitted themselves tolerably.
I have just spent all the money I earned temping earlier in the year on having my books and so on shipped here, and on a shiny toy. Thank you all very, very much for all your advice on both of these issues.
I have cells. Yay cells. They seem to be settling in ok, so soon I shall begintorturing them horribly taking lots of pretty pictures of them. It feels good somehow to be responsible for cellies again; actually starting experiments will feel even better!

I say, neutrally, supporting neither.

Date: 2006-06-22 09:00 am (UTC)I was watching the Argentina-Netherlands game last night (albeit only the first half, as I wanted to get home and watch The Convent), and whilst I was happily standing in the pub cheering along with the rest of the orange-clad crowd, a Dutch win would have meant a possible England-Argentina match in the quarter-finals (assuming that Ecuador and Portugal would co-operate, which isn't a given by any standards). Ack!
Oh well.
How's your Swedish coming? It struck me last night when I was at my friend's house that I'm actually capable of having a rather involved conversation about spirituality in Dutch now. Perhaps that's to be expected after more than two years here - but then I know a PhD student from Hungary who's been here for about four years and whilst he can understand Dutch fine, he (in his own words) didn't make the effort to learn it properly. He's still a lovely chap though.
Gosh, that was a digression and a half!
