Reasons for reading it: There was quite a bit of buzz about it when it came out a couple of years ago, and I had the impression people were seeing it as an alternative to derivative or nostalgia-driven genre stuff. How it came into my hands: I bought it directly from the publisher and paid full price for the DRM-free ebook.
