I don't usually squee over the latest Medical Breakthrough because that sort of thing is always horribly over-hyped. There's an element of that going on here, but in this case I'd say even the proof of concept is cool.

Wow!

While it's true that this kind of thing is on my radar because of personal interest, this technology is not at all likely to be helpful for Screwy. It's just very, very cool that they've got something like this to work.

I wonder if this is from the same research that was demo'd at a Women's Engineering Soc conference about 8 years ago? I've been waiting for bionic legs for a long time!

I don't know if it's part of the same thing, but it wouldn't surprise me. Obviously this kind of technology is going to take some time to develop, and the experiment reported in Nature is the result of years of work in this area. I had seen other things along these lines before but didn't really expect them to come to anything. (But I also didn't expect cloning from adult cells to be possible until Dolly the sheep, so perhaps I'm just too pessimistic!)
