Apparently Sweden is marking Holocaust Remembrance Day. Seen on the way through town this afternoon:
  • a series of large bonfires arranged around a central pavillion with banners proclaiming "Holocaust"
  • a bunch of Christians holding a service in a public square, surrounded by people carrying Israeli flags

While I appreciate the sentiment, neither bonfires nor Israeli flags strike me as a particularly tasteful way to remember the Holocaust...

The first I head about Holocaust day was at church .... why is it that we commemorate rememberance sunday with such fervour and solemnity, but when it comes to this, it slips by almost unnoticed?

My first thought was "Marking Holocaust Remembrance Day with what? Holocaust Remembrance Day Remembrance Day". But that seems tragically accurate.

Mostly, I think, because it only started in 2001 (http://www.hmd.org.uk/about/) so there hasn't been enough time for traditions to accrete in the same way.

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
