Hm, good suggestion. I'd forgotten about the existence of local clubs and was only thinking about con-based fandom. I am pretty certain there's an active scene in Birmingham, which is more like an hour on the train than a short bus ride, but quite possibly just the thing I need for a social group that doesn't have too many expectations of me.
