Rageh Omaar recently presented a three-part series The Life of Muhammad on BBC2. It is presumably still available on BBC iplayer. I found his attempt to justify the killing of the Jewish men after the siege of Medina unduly apologetic but the series as a whole is interesting and an easy introduction to the subject.
