Thank you for the encouragement! Yes, I definitely do think that doing something else (ie my normal solo routine) while this unsuitable instructor is running the class is the best strategy. And I will enquire with the gym whether the substitution is a permanent or temporary arrangement.
I've definitely had off-days, but not previously days that were actively painful or upsetting. But I'm sure I'll get over it, especially with everybody cheering me on via DW!
Cycling to work is a really good idea, and would greatly mitigate my problem that exercise takes up time that I'd rather spend on other things. The trouble is that I'm not very confident at all cycling on roads, and I don't really fancy the last mile up to the university, which is up a steep hill along a busy main road.
