I feel a bit bad that joining this discussion kept you from getting to work, but there's loads to say about it and people have such an interesting range of perspectives! I definitely agree that there are lots of different reasons for giving and lots of different causes that do different things, not a single "best" charity.
I'm a great fan of MSF/Doctors Without Borders, cool that you chose them for your regular donation. And it's great that the person who was trying to persuade you was so thoughtful and friendly! I also give to research charities, usually UK ones for lots of obvious reasons. I like the idea of participating in your community as well as just giving money; that's very important to me too.
Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
