Icon love! I think the difference between the Bad Sex Award and some of the commentary I've seen about Fifty shades is that the BSA has more of a vibe of ribbing between mates (I get the impression that Will Self basically aims for the award every year), whereas the Fifty shades takedowns seem much more like outsiders looking down on low culture, and on middle-aged women in particular. There's sort of an unstated assumption that you don't give the BSA to any random Mills & Boon, you give it to something that's supposed to be Literary and misses the mark, so even by being considered for the award you're more or less being accepted into the canon.
