Huh, that's really interesting that subjects that are more about thinking and studying than actual bench experiments may be less heartbreaking. I do know people who've been pretty bloody miserable in computer science or humanities, but I can see that there's a particular kind of grinding frustration and disappointment with physical experiments.
And yeah, maths is nearly unique in that people reach a point where they simply can't understand it any more. That wall is not a common experience in other fields, I think.
In any case I'm pleased to know you had a good supervisor and at least some structured training. That's the kind of thing I feel should be the norm, not exceptional good fortune, but the system really isn't set up to facilitate that!
