Exactly. I should add that my supervisor was brilliant, and very supportive. But that wasn't enough. And the people who were Head of School at different times while I was enrolled were accommodating about health and personal issues, and tried hard to make it possible for me to finish, but that also wasn't enough.
Another student who started just after me managed to submit in 3 years, right before being hospitalized for being at risk of self harm through eating disorder(s). People in the school, academic and non-academic could clearly see that the PhD process was screwing people up, but felt helpless to do anything about it.
Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
