Heh, I love that the internet has ruined your pretensions! I think inventing such a thing as "technical middle class" may be one of the most useful new ideas to come out of this survey. It makes intuitive sense to me that there's a group of people who have middle-class levels of income and white collar jobs but don't share the values and interests generally thought to be typical of the "middle-class".
