That's a useful point about "middle", and thinking about the median pound is really telling about wealth distribution, I wouldn't have thought of it that way. And you're quite right that wealth is a lot more than the number on your pay slip or the theoretical market value of your assets.
I don't really love inheritance tax, because it feels gratuitously redistributive and it does seem like people should be able to set their kids up to have a good standard of living if they want to. But I reluctantly accept it as a less-worse way of raising revenue for the Treasury.
