The crux is, the mapping depends on the lighting. It's not a matter of or idiom do much as there being two different concepts that we conflate (because we use the same ?)

This being hard is why my dad was able to make a living for many years doing colour-matching for textiles. (And I get to do it all from the other side in my job...)
