This is culturally extremely widespread - it's still very common in India and Singapore (and I think China) and related diasporas, and it was definitely the case in German-speaking Europe as recently as 40 years ago (and probably more recently, but I'm third-gen so my accounting of great-aunts to whom I'm not actually related by blood is not necessarily massively helpful ;). Also definitely used to be a thing in the Englischweltraum, um, English-speaking world; common in the UK until, again, relatively recently (there's no such thing as society, anyone?). Would need to do more research and less top-of-my-head-ing to give you actual dates on any of this, though :-)
