My understanding is that, in a somewhat over-simplified way, most people have a weight set-point, and their metabolic rate changes if they change activity and intake levels. A minority of people have a metabolism set point, so their weight is much more prone to fluctuate based on exact calorie balance. If I really wanted to weigh less I would probably be combining more intense and more frequent exercise than I'm currently doing with mild dietary restriction, but even with that I agree the odds aren't great. But there are enough people informing me like it's supposed to be obvious that if I just got up off my bum and moved around more I would magically get thin, so I am recording the evidence that this doesn't in fact happen.
