I'm almost surprised this is something you struggle with, you seem so together and so well connected to your friends. But it really sounds like you know exactly where I'm coming from with the email and general communication guilt. I really loved the moving in card you sent me; I think most people do like receiving cards and it's little enough effort to write a message short enough to fit on one that I should make it more of a habit.
I think if you're not already on FB you will be better off staying out of it. But yes, there are too many orgs which are contactable only via FB, and that's a real problem. I don't find Twitter depressing, just... inadequate. I can see it's a good idea to be careful, though.
I didn't know you had come from Monochrome. That and CIX are places I get the impression that a lot of people feel about like I do about LJ, just really sad that such a good online community is gone. I think you're onto something about the balance between public and personal. Even with DW, which comes from origins of teenage girls chatting about their days, there's pressure to write something polished which means that people don't write at all. But if you don't get any audience and feedback, it's hard to be motivated to keep posting.
Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
