I think if Ello takes off, it will be as an alternative to Twitter without the character limit. Primarily a broadcast medium rather than a conversational medium, somewhere it's easy to browse and dash off a quick response to public events and news while on the go. Even Twitter gets a lot of flak for its inadequate privacy and anti-abuse tools, and it's much less usable by women, minorities and vulnerable people than somewhere like DW is. Ello is going to need to meet at least that minimum standard if it's still going to be here in 6 months' time, let alone 6 years.
