I definitely know what you mean, if people tell me I'm pretty or beautiful I'm often not really convinced they're actually talking to me. I think what you're saying about compliments on things you've actively chosen like clothes makes a lot of sense. And yes, specific compliments on some aspect of appearance seem more sincere than just generally "you're pretty".
