This resonates quite a lot with me, I would rather choose something that might possibly make a tiny difference than something which is definitely negative or can't help. And I do tend to believe that lots of small positive actions like this do add up to change.
I definitely know what you mean about organizations that are trying to do more good coming in for criticism. I suppose consumers who are drawn to ethical businesses are precisely the people who are going to care about the enterprise falling short, cos otherwise they'll just pick whatever unethical company is cheapest or most convenient in the first place. And I think it's easy to get discouraged, because you want to do the right thing, and then you find that the thing you're supporting is problematic, but you can't put unlimited effort into this particular right thing when there are so many competing ethical claims, so it's tempting to just give up.
