Yes, good point, my comments about ostentatious modesty were a little glib, I think. The real friction comes from being caught between two different community norms. If your community of origin expects fairly extensive covering, but you are in a context where less covering is the norm, I don't think it's ostentatious to stick with the norms you're more used to. As I've experienced in a very minor way that it's kind of uncomfortable to switch to wearing less than you're used to. Making people in that tricky situation feel bad about their choices is not my preferred approach at all.
And yes, I agree that people in general don't have a right to dictate how I should dress. Enforcing people removing clothing is exactly analogous to trying to get people to smile for the viewer's pleasure. I think specific individuals who have a personal relationship to me are allowed to express opinions about how they feel about the way I dress, and if it's not a big cost for me, I may adapt my dress slightly to make them feel more comfortable. Society in general, or random strangers in the street, do not have such a right, and I am indeed going to be pretty annoyed if they try to dictate my clothing in the absence of any personal relationship.
Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
