Thank you, that's a clear explanation of why a USB headset is better than one that plugs directly into the mic socket. I've found my old kit now but it seems that the piece that holds the mic to the actual headband is snapped, and I think that's going to make it effectively unusable, so I shall look for Logitech or Plantronics equipment to replace it.
