Wow, what an awesomely relevant icon! And ok, I should be making test riding a priority; it seemed great when I went into the friendly bike shop and the guy said he'd drop some bikes by our house, but in fact he didn't do that, and he's hard to communicate with to find out why not. So maybe the answer is to try to go to a different bike shop where I can at least ride the bike round the block before I commit myself.
