Many thanks for the offer. I think if I could go into a shop with a clearer idea what sort of bike I want things would go better. I mean, I think I want a nice sturdy Dutch bike, step-through and upright, but I am not sure about that. Knowing whether hub gears in particular work for me seems like it would narrow the search space quite a bit. Also we're at least vaguely similar in height, I think (though I always forget how tall people are...)
