A few of my circle made resolutions to post every day in 2018, and having daily journal type updates is just making my DW so much happier. I can't plausibly post every day, but I'd like to aim for once a week, which is more than I've managed since I started the new job.

Adventures: I went to the Saturday part of [personal profile] nou's Croydon Fun Weekend and I did indeed have fun. Good conversation, lots of tasty food, a 'pervasive game', which is something I hadn't tried before. I was disappointed not to get to the local history walk, but I did enjoy a small exhibition about the history of the Gujarati community in the UK and especially Croydon, at the local museum. I was especially excited to see [personal profile] nanaya and [personal profile] alextiefling, as it's been far too long (their children weren't yet verbal last time we hung out together).

Work: Not quite six months in, I have reached the part of my job I knew would happen, where the novelty has worn off, and the project has run into some annoying snags. I'm feeling a bit down about it, but not as badly as I feared. The constant background anxiety of being a failing academic has pretty much gone. Last week I conducted job interviews, which is a first for me, and our favourite candidate has accepted the post, so that's exciting. And the new Medical School are interested in working with me and hopefully using the teaching methods I'm trying to promote, which could be a pretty big scoop if it works out.

Personal: I am happy to be in a position to spend plenty of time with my local partners (local! yay!) and OSOs' kids. I am not managing to do as many social things as I'd hoped, but I think I'm still seeing more of Cambridge people than when I was commuting.

Media: Basically none. I am picking my way through Paradise Lost slowly. I re-watched some of Moana with Andreas recently, but neither of us made it through to the end. I am hoping to catch The shape of water when it comes out in a couple of weeks.

Playing: We have been getting quite into The voyages of Marco Polo lately. It's a fairly complex worker placement game that took me a while to get my head round, but it's very satisfying now I can have some stab at a planned strategy. I especially like that it's about pre Renaissance-era exploration, and it really conveys a sense that cross-continental travel was a serious enterprise, it has much more geography than many other map-based games. Judith joined us the other week, and I thought it might be a bit complex for a 9yo, even one who is very good at strategy games, but she really got it.

I have some thinky posts planned, too, possibly one about orientalist board games, possibly one about bullying and social justice (which may overlap with the free speech stuff that isn't quite coalescing into a coherent post yet).

Yay, I like being in people’s updates!

I have a ticket to see The Shape of Water when I go on holiday to Glasgow later this month.

I'm looking forward to the posts pondering in your final paragraph. You will make me think.

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
