I second Ambyr's comment. I think the trilogy keeps getting better and the romances don't necessarily proceed predictably. And Dara's past definitely does not get glossed over. Recommended.
If I recall correctly (which is absolutely not reliable, were the French leaving Egypt at the beginning? Timelines in Daevabad are definitely vague, but that would put the human parts ~1800.
