(Another possibility is that you've been misled into thinking that what people say they want is what they actually want, and so when people show by their actions that they want something that they said they didn't want, or that they don't want something that they said they did, you think that this is because they have somehow been manipulated. But it is actually because people often either lie or are mistaken about what they really want. It is people's actions and choices that reveal their true preferences, not what they say or the answers they give to questions or opinion polls or customer surveys.)
