I've had a very pleasant shabbat. Several new people turned up at synagogue, which is particularly pleasing since the community is barely big enough to be viable anyway and a few people have left or are about to leave. Also, they are lovely people.

So we had a companionable meal yesterday evening, and a service today where I coped with introducing new people to the rather eccentric way we do things. By judicious selection of the passage I read from Torah, I managed to give the impression that Ki Tetze is mainly about business ethics and social justice, and quietly ignored the fact that most of it is about sexual perversion. It's been a long time since we had enough people to bother reading from the sefer (Torah scroll), and Ki Tetze is not the easiest, but I think I did a reasonable job.

Then I came home and finished outlining the services for the High Holy Days (need to pass the information on to the community and then I'm going to sit back and let it happen while I write my thesis). And wrote a couple of rather belated book reviews: A suitable boy and The last dancer.
