liv: alternating calligraphed and modern letters (letters)

Day 9 of the (in my case very slow-running) music meme asks for a song that makes you happy. And I have quite a lot of those, making me happy is a big reason I have a music collection at all. I think I'm going to go for Complex person by The Pretenders. The lyrics are not all that cheerful in some ways, but I love the bouncy tune and I always hear this as a song about determination and not letting things get you down.

Also I've had a good week for playing games:
Last weekend we managed to play some bridge with [personal profile] ptc24. I had a run of declarer hands at the start, some of which just clicked into place and some of which went down disastrously. [personal profile] jack and I lost the rubber comprehensively to [personal profile] ptc24 and [personal profile] cjwatson, but it was a satisfying loss because everybody bid and played the best they could with the hands they were dealt. Also it was way too hot to think so any useful play felt like an achievement.

[personal profile] cjwatson introduced me to Genji, a fairly simple, quick little game about trying to woo princesses with poetry. The Japanese-style art is very very pretty, and although it's somewhat luck-based, there are enough decisions to make it interesting while not being too thinky.

Then we played a little bit of Magic: The Gathering, giving me a chance to play with my Kaladesh decks. I got the Nissa and Chandra beginner decks for Christmas, along with some expansion packs, and amazingly enough I found Saheeli in one of them. So I've tweaked Nissa's deck to make it even more so, it's absolutely full of growable green creatures along with some that bring in energy, and some fairly generic blues for defence. Chandra's deck got a lot more revision because it's now a red-blue deck with two different Planeswalkers. I removed all the whites designed for crewing vehicles, and brought in a bunch more artefacts and all the cards I could find with fabricate. So it's a mix of red flash damage with the kinds of artefacts that stack, and still a few rather nice vehicles from the original.

I am still massively in love with Kaladesh art and the general flavour of this cyborg-steampunk vaguely Indian world. Mechanically, well, C hasn't played all that much, and I am still finding vehicles a bit fiddly to play with, let alone teach. But it's also a mechanic with a lot of potential and I'm finding it really satisfying to be able to bring in relatively low cost, powerful artefact creatures. I'm not ready to move on to more recent sets, though, because I'm so taken with the aesthetic. And Saheeli is my fictional bae <3

This weekend [personal profile] ceb had an ELOPP. Which somehow ended up with late night tipsy stereotype Guess Who, the adult variant where you are not allowed to ask questions that have factual answers based on the appearance of the characters, but only subjective ones like "did they vote to leave Europe?". It's really satisfying when you manage to get it right based on knowing your friends well enough to guess how they might stereotype imaginary people. I got down to two playing with IWJ, and my final distinguishing question, would you want to work on a project with them? eliminated the wrong one of the pair. In fact about half the audience agreed with me and half with IWJ, so I think that question was just unfortunate. And that segued into even later, even drunker Codenames; I'd not had a chance to play it with a group of people at a party before, and it works really well for that. We had some really excellently silly debates with our spymasters being impressively poker-faced as their agents went off on the wrong tracks.

making me happy is a big reason I have a music collection at all

Funnily enough, that's very relevant to the music meme post I'm about to put up today. I'm asking how many people do use music to make them happy, and if so, what's the place of sad music in their lives. (Kind of from the opposite angle - the one I'm doing today is 'reminds you of someone you'd rather forget'.)

Hello! And yes! I think this was at the back of my mind when I was writing the post. If I'm despairing enough, music that's straight-up uplifting seems laughable or even deceitful, and only music which starts out by acknowledging the Sea of Black Glop I'm submerged in has a chance of lifting me out of it.

Soundbite

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
