My friends list is full of brilliance right now. Two absolutely classic short remarks that should be brought to more general attention:

- mummimamma overheard a fantastic comment on gender representation in SF.

- blackherring is wittier than witty on the subject of procrastination. jillt's comment makes it even funnier. (And I myself am procrastinating by posting to link to a post about procrastination, for that matter.)

I could post these to metaquotes, but hey. I'm more interested in sharing a laugh with my friends than a bunch of random strangers.

Unrelatedly, would any German speakers reading this like to suggest me some plausible names for German towns? I'm playing Civ and my empire has got so big that the computer has run out of names and started again from the beginning. It breaks my head having two Hamburgs and two Berlins and stuff, so I need new names. They can be real or fictional, silly or sensible, names of tiny little villages are also fine. Thanks.

Today is the 38^th day, making 5 complete weeks and 3 days of the Omer.

I'm playing Civ and my empire has got so big that the computer has run out of names and started again from the beginning.

I'd never have thought of you as someone to let a computer name your cities; I certainly don't, I name them alphabetically by initial as I go along. [ Or occasionally reverse alphabetical by initial just for the variety, as I do not often get any further than T if I start from A. ] Usually with some thematic link; my current game-in-play has cities called Bounce, Cuddle, Hug and so on. [ They're rather a nice culture. ]

Perhaps this is different in later versions of Civ, but when you run out of German cities, do you not start being given names from the list of "any culture can build these" ? I also find myself wondering how the "find city" function works with duplicate names.

OK, you're going to laugh at this, but, I only override the default names if I can think of linguistically suitable city names for the culture I'm playing.

I name them alphabetically by initial as I go along.
Alphabetical, that's a good idea... that would make it a whole lot easier to keep track of which city is which. Maybe I should try that. Right now my empire is spread over about 8 medium-small land masses, and I'm really tempted to start naming everything with a prefix so I can see at a glance which part of the the map they're in. I hesitate because... I can't believe I actually went through this thought process, but because generally city names in the real world aren't systematic in that way. *blush* I get far too emotionally involved with Civ to play it at all well.

That is deeply cute. I think you may have inspired me to start naming cities after things that are not cities next game!

Yeah, initially, but I (and the AI players between us) have run out of those too.

They're unique from the computer's point of view in that one is at the beginning of the list and one is at the end of the list. So it is just about manageable, but I'm not good at even pretend geography in the first place and having duplicate names confuses the hell out of me.
