I'm back

The final part of my summer was completely wonderful; [personal profile] jack came out to join me, and we spent a glorious week in California with [livejournal.com profile] darcydodo and [personal profile] forestofglory, and then we came back to [personal profile] hatam_soferet's and "did" New York in three days. I have a backlog of several dozen blog posts and book reviews and stuff, but I think I'm more or less up to date on reading.

Anyway, I'm going to start with asking you to help me make decisions: I have three options for the weekend of 22nd August, and I need to decide between them fairly soon.
  1. Bicon
    Pro:
    • Lots of cool people are going to be there.
    • I've vaguely wanted to go for a while, and while I'm unemployed seems a good opportunity.
    • I want to get more involved in the Queer community.
    • I'm feeling a little weird about being perceived as straight due to being in an opposite-sex relationship and the Bicon people would be likely to be very sympathetic about that sort of thing.
    Con:
    • Expensive.
    • I still haven't really decided if I want to define myself by the gender of the people I'm attracted to.
    • I'm kind of scared of the whole beautiful goth thing, though people have assured me it's possible to go to Bicon and not dress up.
    • I feel weird about getting deeply involved in yet another community that [personal profile] jack is excluded from (yes, he's supportive, and yes, the community are afaik welcoming to straight partners, but still).
  2. MidrEsch
    Pro:
    • Several of my Swedish Jewish friends are going to be there and it would be great to see them again
    • It sounds like a really great event and I'm all energized about Jewish stuff at the moment.
    • I definitely want to get engaged in the European community of young, active Progressive Jews.
    • I've never been to Luxembourg before!
    Con:
    • Expensive.
    • I just spent the summer in New York doing intensely Jewish, so maybe I should take a break and focus on other aspects of my life.
    • It will probably involve yet more not extremely necessary flying.
  3. Stay home
    Pro:
    • Cheap, and I'm unemployed and have already spent a lot of money on a big holiday this year.
    • Both weekend events are slightly more than a weekend, so might possibly clash with job interviews.
    Con:
    • Boring!
    • I want to make the most of this hopefully short period of unemployment to do all the stuff that might otherwise be hard to fit in with work.

I plan to be in the Carlton Thursday evening (tomorrow), in shul Saturday, at P'tite Soeur's housewarming party in Brighton on Saturday night, at [livejournal.com profile] miriammoules's housewarming party in London on Sunday, and just possibly at Pembury Sunday evening if that looks sensible with geography and timing. After that, I'm probably more free than usual for the next few weeks; give me a shout if you'd like to get together!

You might be able to do MidrEsch by train, if you look into it? Luxembourg isn't that far, and the Eurostar is surprisingly cheap, if you can be flexible.

i don't actually mean you should sit in the house for two days, but you knew that...

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
