Fun day

Yesterday the shabbat service at synagogue was partly in celebration of three members of the community who have recently been promoted to professor. There probably are other places than Cambridge where this kind of thing happens, but I suspect there aren't very many! Anyway, one of the older members of the community wished me Please God by you!, which tickled me; goodness knows I've had to bite my tongue enough times when I get that comment in its more traditional context.

Then we met up with pseudomonas to see the yummy illuminated manuscripts at the Fitzwilliam. Oh wow. So very, very gorgeous. blackherring, it's on till 11^th December; do you think you could get here a bit early for Limmud so you can see it? It's an absolutely amazing exhibition, and anyone who's already in the UK should certainly see it. (And if you happened to make that an excuse to come and visit me at the same time, so much the better.)

Incidentally, one thing we learned from the exhibition was that the Emperor Charlemagne's father was called Pippin III. This is cool.

And then I went to the cinema to see the new Pride and Prejudice, which was also fun.

What's the more traditional context for "Please God by you!"? - I don't recall ever coming across that phrase before.

Ah, sorry, it's a Yiddish thing. People (usually elderly Jewish women) say it at weddings to unmarried people. It means, in Yiddish idiom, I hope God makes something nice like this happen to you. This makes me snarly, because I know they mean well, but it's annoying when I have no intention of getting married!

I wish I could. But YU have this really clever idea that since they're a Jewish University, they'll continue classes right through December - so the more time I take off at freaking Christmas when everyone else in the whole bloody world has off, the more class I miss. You'll have to send me some postcards instead :(
