I've had a lovely day with my family. We had a huge argument, mainly about education but also about social mobility and prescriptive grammar and politics and all sorts over lunch. The we spent the afternoon watching Shrek, which is cute, and nicely animated, and does a reasonable job of defying expectations. I'd like it as froth apart from the fact that it utterly, horribly butchers Hallelujah. There are some bad covers I just can't forgive.

Then the first chanukah candle, interspersed with lots of silliness. I don't care very much about chanukah, but having the whole family together singing cheesy chanukah songs badly is lovely.

Bad covers are then ones I have to put up with staggering out of the casino's ball/function room at 120 dB on an almost continual basis. Once you've heard one more... fascinating... rendition of 'Living La Vida Loca' from a band where the singer can't sing, the drummer only believes in 2/4 (and polyrhythms must be a weird form of birth control), and the remainder of the band has no clue about what to fill in the empty spaces with then Rufus Wainrights' cover of of 'Hallelujah' is actually pretty passable. ;(

Come to think of it, even KD Lang's cover of the same isn't bad, and I hate KD Lang. I think it's probably due to the strength of the song itself. I agree it's best sung by that gloomy Canadian, but just about any version of it winds up sounding decent.

If you can't have a good argument with your family about religion, sex or politics in the morning and then settle down to watch some DVD or other in the afternoon on your traditional feast day- then when can you? :)
Sounds very much like my expectation of Christmas, which I always enjoy immensely. I don't care if it's trite, have a happy chanukah anyway.
