liv: cartoon of me with long plait, teapot and purple outfit (mini-me)

My life is generally going ok; I'm slightly less busy in the sense that I don't have anything urgent that must be done in the next few weeks, but that means that I have a huge heap of long-term stuff that needs doing towards setting up my research group. My research group, let me just repeat those words! But a lot of them are things that are hard to get started on, or run into annoying Catch-22s like not being able to have money for equipment until I have lab space, and not being entitled to lab space until I'm actually up and running and doing experiments, which require equipment, which I can't acquire because I have nowhere to put it...

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] siderea has a really great piece about the real reason for flamewars. It's not that you can't convey emotional nuances in plain text; as Siderea brilliantly points out:
...we, as a civilization, generally consider literature, something that somehow also managed to carry on in mere text for the millennia of its existence as a human craft, supremely capable of expressing the full range and nuance of the human condition.
And it's more subtle than Penny Arcade's famous Internet Fuckwad theory, though I am sure that plays a part too.

[personal profile] monanotlisa quoted [livejournal.com profile] ascian3 saying something really trenchant about why we still need feminism. I have definitely come across statistics indicating that, at least in civilized European countries, there is very little direct discrimination against women in the workplace left, but there is still very significant discrimination against mothers compared to fathers. Since most women do want to have children, this ends up putting women at a massive career disadvantage.

[livejournal.com profile] j4 is aiming to post every day throughout November. This is a good thing because lots of her posts are really interesting and beautifully written.

I don't know if it's quite good etiquette to link to my sweetie, but [personal profile] jack has been posting some original fic, some of it based loosely on Magic: The Gathering, which might appeal to some of you. Recommended if you like the grey area between funny or cute, and spooky or dark.

a) Yay research group!

b) Equipment storage - isn't that what spare bedrooms are for?

c) Teahugs.

Soundbite

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
