Google Wave
Nov. 25th, 2009 06:26 pmSeparate post so I can do screened comments: I finally have a Google Wave account (thanks,
afuna)! My username is rachelgb. If you want to connect to me on it, comment with your Google Wave username if you have an account, or your email address if you would like an invite. I probably won't be around on the system all that much until I have the aforementioned new computer and preferably a home internet connection.

I think the plan is that it will allow rich media exchanges, so you can put verbal comments, pictures, videos, documents, etc in the same stream, and it can either be simultaneous or asynchronous. You can kind of do all these things already (eg in DW comment threads!) but it's supposed to make it more streamlined.
It's not going to be useful at all until it's open to everyone, and I think this insisting you have to have a Google account to use it is a bad marketing move. But I'm reserving judgement about whether it will actually become useful one day; if I had to bet I think it's about 30% likely that it will be the killer app that makes us all wish how we ever managed without it, about 30% likely that a few geeks will love it and the rest will just pass it by, and 40% likely that it will completely flop and be forgotten by next year.
