elusis has a great piece on the social justice implications of the invasive procedures. She writes very much in the American academic feminist style, so if that puts you off badly you probably won't get through her piece. But if you can bear that, it's IMO a really, really impressive piece of amateur journalism (and as such has been linked all over the place, from BoingBoing to the New York Times, so this link may not be news to some of you).

compilerbitch breaks down the physics of what "soft" X-rays actually mean. There is disagreement in the comment thread from people who know what they're talking about;
compilerbitch moves in the kind of circles where she rubs shoulders with all kinds of serious experts. But it's something worth considering, anyway.
