liv: cast iron sign showing etiolated couple drinking tea together (argument)
[personal profile] liv
In some ways this is a US-specific issue, but where the US leads other countries often follow. And lots of my friends are either in the USA or, like me, need to visit the country for personal or business reasons.

1. [livejournal.com profile] elusis has a great piece on the social justice implications of the invasive procedures. She writes very much in the American academic feminist style, so if that puts you off badly you probably won't get through her piece. But if you can bear that, it's IMO a really, really impressive piece of amateur journalism (and as such has been linked all over the place, from BoingBoing to the New York Times, so this link may not be news to some of you).

2. [livejournal.com profile] compilerbitch breaks down the physics of what "soft" X-rays actually mean. There is disagreement in the comment thread from people who know what they're talking about; [livejournal.com profile] compilerbitch moves in the kind of circles where she rubs shoulders with all kinds of serious experts. But it's something worth considering, anyway.

Soundbite

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
