liv: cup of tea with text from HHGttG (teeeeea)

It's probably cheating to make meta-posts like this, but hey, it will help me to remember the backlog of things I want to post instead of just sitting here in front of a blank screen not being able to call to mind what was on my list! Behind the cut are some ideas for stuff I might talk about in the next three weeks. You're very welcome to express preferences or suggest things you'd like to hear about that I haven't thought of. I'll happily write a tailormade opinion on just about anything, I always enjoy that kind of thing.

I made my original LJ to talk about books, and I'm always happy to do that. Apart from anything else I have enough books I am behind on reviewing to keep me going for a good long time. But also I wanted to follow up [personal profile] syllopsium's idea of making a chart of my top ten worst books, I think that would generate interesting discussion. I should probably talk a bit about e-readers and digital books and piracy and stuff, cos I have Opinions about that! Anyone seen any good book-related memes lying around recently?

I'm going to need to make at least one more post about the upcoming UK general election; sorry if that's boring for people who aren't from this country. But based on some of the conversations I've been having in the run-up to this election, I think it would be good to expand that to talk about some of the principles I'm using to make political decisions. [personal profile] pseudomonas suggested I talk about politics but not necessarily just party politics, and [personal profile] jack has been discussing good ideas about "the pictures in your head", the assumptions that people make about morality and economics and so on, which then influence their political decisions.

I keep saying I should blog more about sciencey topics, but I never quite know where to start. Perhaps with a little bit of explaining my work, both the kinds of things I study and what I actually do day-to-day. Any requests, anyway?

Definitely want to talk a bit about my plans for [personal profile] jack to come and live with me, because that's not a direction I expected to see my life taking, and it's something that's occupying my mind a bit. If I'm feeling brave I might try to gather together my long-brewing thoughts about being a Queer woman in an opposite-sex relationship, but that's a bit of a scary topic to do in front of an audience. There are other topics which are in my mind and could probably benefit from being discussed a bit, but I'll have to get my head together to address those.

I've found a really good local gaming group, thanks to [ profile] mathcathy. So I need to write down some of the new games I've been introduced to before I forget which ones I liked! Also I should talk about Dominion and Agricola which are my two new favourite games. Possibly worth a small mention of [personal profile] jack introducing me to Magic: the Gathering, because most people have probably noticed by now that I'm a bit nerdy.

Video games: I've completed a couple of PopCap games recently: Plants vs Zombies and Zuma's Revenge: Adventure. I have Opinions about them too, so I should post some reviews. And probably look for people to play competitive games against. Especially old-skool Civilization!

Jewish stuff
I don't think I've ever written specifically about how I got into the community leadership stuff I do. Would be good to talk a bit about that and my ideas about community and inclusion and such. I possibly talk about Jewish stuff too much, though, so I'm not sure I should get even more into this.

I have written a few essays on things like feminism and I should probably continue doing that. One topic I have in mind is about people making analogies between sex and race, and perhaps I could feed that into intersectionality topics more generally. I wonder if it would be a good idea to talk a little bit about porn, though I really don't want to rehash the feminist "sex wars".

Anything else I've forgotten? Any requests?

Anyway, to save this post from being all meta and no content, you should all go and play with this contact survey. It's a proper science experiment (I know one of the scientists involved), but it also gives you a cute little gizmo to post to Facebook or DW with a pretty network diagram, and a which X are you most like badge. Yesterday I was at a scientific meeting and met an awful lot of people, so it told me that my most similar celebrity was Nick Clegg. Fun, and also useful :-)

Those all sound like good topics to me!

I think I said this before, but I've considered the "10 worst books" thing before, but I always get about 10,000 words into the first paragraph explaining why Dan Brown is NOT on the list, despite a long list of things about his books that I hate at great length and in great detail... :)

Yay Agricola! Some friends and I got that a few months ago and have been playing it a fair bit since.

I'd personally love to hear what you think. If you don't post an entry, I may have to PM you and poke your brain sometime. :)

The survey told me I was most like Morph. I have no idea who this is or what that means.

I'm always up for reading any discussion of books and science. Hmmm... maybe a "10 Worst 'Science' Books Written for the Laity" would be amusing. Pointless, but amusing.

I like the Jewish stuff! (And I should write about that topic, myself, since it's a much larger part of my life than I probably give the impression of.)

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
